Most people may wonder why a Registered Nurse would want to do an entire career shift to becoming a health coach.
Yes, I understand to most this can sound reckless; however, I was feeling a void within myself. I was not fulfilled. When I decided to become a nurse, it was to take quality care of my patients. I have a passion to make a difference in people’s lives and to heal the ill.
As a nurse, I was able to take care of my patients, but it was not in a holistic method.
A primary method to take care of my patients was to dispense medications. Medications for heartburn, blood pressure, the list goes on! Was I able to find out the root cause of that heartburn? Was I able to give these patients a healthy diet and movement regime? Was I able to determine the root cause of their chronic disease? No, I was able to give them a packet of overwhelming information and refer them to their primary care provider. There are patients who do not particularly care to determine the root cause of their ailments. Let’s face it, a pill or medication is much easier than doing self-work. On the contrary, there were many patients who would have been fully engaged with the right guidance and approach.
I started to get frustrated that we would print something off for these patients regarding a “heart healthy diet” and just hand it to them, with no guidance or explanation. It’s standard for patients to leave the hospital with a handout about eating a low sodium diet or exercising more; the hospital hands out so many handouts to these poor patients that it is completely overwhelming to them. They leave the hospital with a handful of handouts, a couple of new diagnoses and no idea what to do next.
How successful are these people going to be with making a genuine change in their life, without any kind of guidance? We give them that great phrase I am sure every nurse has had to say, “follow up with your primary care provider”. This was eating away at my soul. I know I can do more, I know I can help at least a fraction of these people. I knew my purpose was greater than just THIS version of healthcare. Let’s just face it— this version creates lifelong customers.
Not to mention, in the middle of all of this, I too, was failed by our healthcare system. I was having miscarriages and they did multiple tests to try to figure out what was wrong. I asked about my hormones since I had acne and hair growth on my chin. My doctor told me this was, “highly unlikely”. After probably a gallon of blood being drawn for labs, multiple doctor visits and multiple different doctors seeing me; I was diagnosed with a hormone imbalance. No one could tell me why I had the imbalance, just that I had one and I had to take medicine for it, and oh yeah I needed to be careful with my diet because I was predisposed to many illnesses, since my diagnosis . I was frustrated and defeated, the tables have turned and I was on the other side of this so called thing called “healthcare”. This sparked something in myself.
I started searching for more. I love holistic medicine, so I started my journey with Ayurvedic medicine. After finishing my Ayurvedic health counselor and contemplating whether or not I should go for my practitioner I decided against it.
I came to this conclusion because no one knows what Ayurveda is, and most people about can be very closed minded regarding their healthcare. They’re not given alternative approaches outside Western medicine.
So, I shifted my vision of how I would help people and I became a health coach. Most everyone knows what a health coach is, and a health coach is looking at the whole you: from relationships, finances, nutrition, career choice, family life, cooking at home, exercising and much more. It encompasses your entire life and not just what is manifesting on the outside through your body. Not to mention I had my own Health Coach and the whole experience of this gave me confidence and put me on the right track to finding myself.
So anyways, after this long-winded story of how I got here and while some will think I am completely bonkers, others will be inspired. The others may have stopped reading after the first few sentences.
